How to become a nail technician

Thinking about a career in nails? Here's a clear, step-by-step path from complete beginner to taking your first paying clients — and where online training fits in.

1. Check what your country requires

Rules for nail technicians differ from country to country, and sometimes from region to region. Some places need a formal licence or a recognised qualification, others don't. Before you start, check with your local authority or beauty industry body what is required where you want to work.

2. Learn hygiene, health and safety first

Clean tools, safe products and healthy natural nails are the foundation of the job. Clients trust a technician who knows how to prevent infections, recognise nail conditions and work with gels and files safely. Start here before anything else.

3. Master the core techniques

Most salon work is built on a few core services. A long-lasting gel polish manicure is the most requested, followed by structured gel (BIAB) to strengthen natural nails. Practise each step slowly until the result is clean and consistent.

4. Learn to use an electric file

An electric file (e-file) makes preparation and removal faster and more precise. Used correctly, it protects the natural nail; used badly, it damages it. Proper training is essential before you use one on clients.

5. Practise and build a portfolio

Practise on friends, family or practice hands, and photograph every set in good light. A small portfolio of clean, well-shaped work is the best way to show new clients what you can do.

6. Get certified and find your first clients

A certificate shows clients and salons that you've completed structured training. Then decide how you want to work: in a salon, renting a chair, mobile or from home. Share your work on social media and ask happy clients to recommend you.
